They've been part of the (street) furniture for the past few months but with engineers seen out and about on Monday evening, it's now been revealed that Ormskirk's new safety cameras are now live.
It seems that the past few months have been an elaborate ruse - or should we say trial period?; the new cameras are now detecting drivers running red lights and speeding, and cover the Five Ways junction west of the town centre where the A59 County Road and A570 Southport Road cross and Halsall Lane feeds in, and where Hayfield Road and Green Lane meet the A59 County Road,
They were installed by the Home Office in response to strong demand from the local community for action to improve safety due to a history of serious incidents.
Over 20 collisions, of which 6 were serious, were recorded during a single 5-year period, with one of the most common causes being failure to comply with the traffic signals.
Offences recorded by the cameras will be reviewed and processed by Lancashire Constabulary; where motorists are eligible they will be offered a diversionary course as an alternative to prosecution, or a fixed penalty of £100 and 3 penalty points - more serious offences will be registered for court and dealt with by the Magistrates.
